The testimony of an expert witness is almost always about a complex, arcane subject. Making a difficult concept understandable to a jury of laymen is essential if they are to understand the testimony. One of the best ways to teach is through the use of case-specific illustrative analogies, pictorial representations of familiar themes or subjects which are readily understood by all members of the jury. These graphic metaphors are then applied to the complex subject matter of the case. Artists-at-Law have conceived of and created illustrative analogies for many kinds of cases, wherever it is essential to make the jury understand even the most difficult concepts as they are presented by expert witnesses. Another application of the analogy is in closing argument, where even cartoons have proven useful in summarizing the main points of the case.
